Siding takes more abuse in Anacortes than most homeowners realize. Between the salt air rolling off Guemes Channel and Rosario Strait, driving rain off the water, and a moss season that can stretch from October well into spring, Skagit County exteriors are under near-constant pressure. Most siding failures don't happen overnight — they start small and quiet, and by the time they're obvious, moisture has usually been getting behind the wall for a while. Knowing what to look for lets you catch problems while they're still a repair, not a full replacement.

Visible Cracking and Splitting

Hairline cracks in lap siding are one of the earliest warning signs, especially on wood and engineered wood products that expand and contract with temperature and moisture swings. In our climate, siding rarely dries out completely between rain events, so cracks tend to stay damp longer than they would in a drier region. Once water finds its way into a crack, it doesn't take long for the surrounding material to soften. Check south- and west-facing walls first — they take the brunt of wind-driven rain off the Sound.

Buckling, Warping, or Waviness

If siding boards look wavy or are separating from the wall surface, that's usually a sign of moisture trapped behind the panel — either from a failed water-resistive barrier, poor flashing, or the siding material itself absorbing water and swelling. Buckling is easy to miss from the ground but obvious once you know to look for shadows and uneven lines running along a wall.

Peeling, Bubbling, or Chalky Paint

Paint failure is often the first visible symptom of a siding problem, not the problem itself. When paint bubbles or peels in sheets rather than wearing evenly, it usually means moisture is pushing out from underneath. A chalky, faded surface that rubs off on your hand is normal weathering; peeling and bubbling are not.

Soft Spots and Rot

Press gently on siding near the bottom of walls, around window and door trim, and anywhere two sections meet. If it gives, feels spongy, or your finger leaves an impression, there's rot underneath. This is one of the most common failure points we see on older wood and wood-composite siding in this area, because those materials rely entirely on paint and caulking to keep water out — and that seal only lasts so long against year-round coastal moisture.

Moss, Algae, and Persistent Green Staining

Some surface moss and algae on siding is just part of living near the water — it's not automatically a failure sign. What matters is whether it keeps coming back heavier each season and whether it's concentrated in one spot rather than spread evenly. Moss that clusters at seams, lap joints, or low corners often means water is sitting there longer than it should, which points to a drainage or flashing issue rather than simple weathering.

Gaps, Separation, and Loose Panels

Look at the seams where siding pieces meet, and where siding meets trim, corner boards, and window frames. Gaps that have opened up, caulking that's cracked or missing, or panels that have visibly pulled away from the wall are all direct paths for wind-driven rain to get behind the siding.

Rising Energy Bills or Drafts

Failing siding doesn't just let water in — it lets conditioned air out. If you've noticed rooms that are harder to heat than they used to be, or a noticeable draft near exterior walls, it's worth having the siding and the wall assembly behind it checked. This is easy to overlook because it develops gradually.

Interior Clues Worth Checking

Sometimes the clearest sign of siding failure shows up inside the house, not outside. Watch for:

  • Musty odors near exterior walls
  • Discoloration or staining on interior drywall
  • Peeling interior paint or wallpaper near an exterior wall
  • Visible mold in corners or along baseboards on outside walls

Any of these can mean water has already made it past the siding and the sheathing behind it.

Why Anacortes Conditions Speed This Up

Coastal Skagit County isn't a harsh climate in the way a desert or a deep freeze is harsh — it's a slow-grind climate. Salt-laden air accelerates corrosion of fasteners and metal flashing. Long stretches of damp, mild weather mean siding rarely gets a real chance to dry out. And extended moss season keeps organic growth and moisture in contact with the siding surface for months at a time. Materials that hold up fine in a drier inland climate often age faster here, especially if the original installation cut corners on flashing, caulking, or ventilation.

What This Means for Replacement Decisions

When siding does need to be replaced, it's worth thinking about how the new material will handle these same conditions over the next 20-30 years, not just how it looks on install day. This is part of why we standardized on James Hardie fiber cement siding: it's non-combustible, engineered for moisture exposure, and holds its factory-applied ColorPlus finish far longer than paint-dependent materials in a wet coastal climate. It's not the only siding product on the market, but it's the one we're willing to put our name behind here.

What to Do If You Spot Warning Signs

A single crack or a small area of moss usually isn't an emergency — but it's worth having someone experienced take a look before the next rainy season. Catching a problem early is almost always cheaper and less disruptive than dealing with rot that's spread into the wall framing.

If you're noticing any of these signs on your home, we're happy to take a look and give you a straightforward, no-pressure assessment of what's going on and what your options are — including a free estimate if replacement makes sense.
